In this blog post, we will explore some practical tips and strategies to help you optimize your time and enhance your productivity as a nurse. Let's dive in!

1️⃣ Plan and Prioritize: Start your day by creating a to-do list or a schedule. Identify the most critical tasks and prioritize them accordingly. This will help you stay focused and ensure that you address the most important and time-sensitive issues first.

2️⃣ Delegate When Possible: As a nurse, you have a supportive team around you. Delegate tasks to other healthcare professionals or support staff whenever appropriate. This not only lightens your workload but also promotes effective teamwork and collaboration.

3️⃣ Effective Communication: Clear and concise communication is key to saving time and avoiding misunderstandings. Use succinct handovers, utilize electronic communication systems, and ensure that all relevant information is conveyed accurately.

4️⃣ Time-Saving Tools: Embrace the technologies and tools available to you. These tools can streamline your workflow and enhance your efficiency.

5️⃣ Take Breaks and Practice Self-Care: It's essential to prioritize self-care and take breaks during your shifts. Taking short breaks can actually increase your productivity and help you recharge. Use this time to have a nutritious meal, stretch, or engage in activities that help you relax and rejuvenate.

6️⃣ Learn to Say No: While it's in our nature to help others, it's important to establish boundaries. It's a busy afternoon assisting with appointments, answering patient questions, and providing support to the doctor as needed. Our patients often require compassion and empathy, and I try my best to make their visits as stress-free and comfortable as possible.

5:00 PM - As the day draws to a close, I clean up the supplies used and prepare the clinic for the following day.

Being a student and having a job to maintain yourself while trying to strive academic achievements, maintaining a social life, and preserving your lifestyle is quite difficult. I’ve been a student for almost 2 years in a Master of Respiratory Care program in a pandemic world where I must complete 3 days of 12 hour shifts with no compensation plus academic work. Luckily, I do have a job that has allowed me to be flexible and still have an income.

Sadly, due to constant clinical hours and little to no time for my job + social activities + family time+ relationships… As a student, the hard reality is that we go through burnout and not everyone talks about it. We sacrifice days and we miss out on important holidays at times due to our hectic schedules. We soak in every ounce of free time due to the constant need to be working or studying. Burnout is real, and it’s even more real as a student trying to maintain everything organized and done perfectly.

I’ve been trying to combat burnout especially at the near end of my program and it has been a struggle. I officially graduate in August and battling the schoolwork, being a good employee and a good daughter, girlfriend, and everything else has stressed me so much out. I cannot imagine those with families or those who live far away from home…

Here are a few tips that have gotten me out of burnout:

1.Ask your boss for a week off! We all need a mental break and I’ve been grateful to have the opportunity to have one thing less off my plate.

2.Go out for lunch or dinner! We suffer from doing 12 long clinical shifts, a dinner with a friend or SO can take the stress off even for a couple hours!

3.Give yourself ONE day. One day to reset, relax and reconvene.

4.Have a million things to do but don’t know where to start? Just complete ONE task. Give yourself that time to tackle ONE task and tomorrow we could always get back to our routine.

5.Organize your routine! I was all over the place. I needed structure and implementing a planner in my life became a life saver. Time management became my biggest enemy during the course of my 2-year program.

6.Pause for a second and remember WHY we are in healthcare, why we chose this route, why we’re doing this. We started this journey in saving lives. So, let’s enjoy the skills we have learned and have satisfaction that you have valuable knowledge.

I would love to hear your stories on how you got through your program. Tell us! My name is Rocio Rodriguez. I am part of the Inspire Team and work alongside Vincent H. to successfully run all things Inspire CPR LLC.

So, my role in Inspire all started with my journey in the medical field. Currently, I am a Respiratory Therapist student, undergoing clinicals and close to graduation.

But we all ask the big question... What is a Respiratory Therapist? Is it a nurse? Is it a form of a doctor? Who are they?

Respiratory Therapists are specialized healthcare workers trained in critical care and cardiopulmonary medicine. Our main focus is the respiratory system and how cardiac events interfere with it. We can treat, manage, evaluate, and care for patients of ALL AGES.

So, what areas/units would you see a Respiratory Therapist in?

We work in the NICU with premature babies (very important since their lungs are the most underdeveloped), in PICU with babies to 18-year-olds, in adult ICUs (we manage the ventilator and if they are intubated), in sub-acute centers, in the emergency department, in home health, in sleep labs, in transport, and so much more.

What exactly do we do?

Well, we do a variety of things! We ensure babies have good respiratory support during deliveries, assist in intubations (all ages), place patients on ventilators and manage it, we deliver aerosolized medications that help you breathe better, we draw blood gases that determine your overall status, we perform EKGs, and so much more.

Who do we work with?

We work CLOSELY with Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Physicians to ultimately care for our patients’ overall health.

How come I never hear about Respiratory Therapists?

We are a really underrated profession! You won’t see us all the time because we don’t need to be constantly at bedside unlike nursing. We carry a heavy workload with sometimes 10+ patients in different areas of the hospital. So, it is very unlikely we interact as much as you interact with your nurse.

Want to know more? Let us know so I can deep dive into my profession! Thank you for reading! :)

Face it, you are learning information in a way that you have never experienced before! On top of this, your instructors are less than helpful! Let’s be honest, the weed out mentality is in FULL FORCE in Nursing education. On top of this, you are dealing with LIFE and every little curveball that it throws at you. So..WTF do you do to prevent yourself from going crazy and to PASS? Don’t worry, we’ve compiled some Tips & Tricks to address this

1. Study Smarter, Not Harder

What does this mean you ask? It means that there is no extra points for putting in 1000+ Hrs for tests if you’re studying wrong. Yes, there is a right way to study. You need to focus on your exemplars, concepts, and major topics that your instructors are stuffing down your throat. These are things like perfusion (ie. CHF, CAD) for example. Next, you need to focus on the important aspects of these MAJOR topics. Don’t worry about all of the other crap that they fill books with. You need to focus on the stuff that RNs care about like teaching points, priority assessments and priority interventions. These are the things that Nursing School will demand that you know for tests and the boards! In other words, it’s not about Quantity but Quality indeed!

2. Priority is Everything

Our discussion from the previous point leads us into this next point. Priority is not something that is MAGIC and as Mysterious as your Nursing instructors make it. It comes down to ABCs and Safety! Remember, whether it is a priority patient, intervention or assessment, you are being asked to rank which of these is the most CRITICAL to Life or Safety at this time. There will always be a clear winner when you think of things in this context. Below is a useful chart to help.

3. Sleep is a MUST

I Know that this may sound ridiculous, I mean what is sleep in Nursing School right? Just like in the real world, you cannot safely navigate through your studies and operate as a safe practitioner in clinic if you are so exhausted that you cannot think straight. Don’t do it here. For your sake, for your grade’s sake and your sanity you must prioritize YOURSELF always. Self Care is key, Remember this point!

We have instructors that are ready to help you today!

The NCLEX test is a daunting exam that is a bane to the existence of many graduate nurses! There are many resources out there to help prepare for the big day! Our recommendations are to BE CAREFUL with the prep-program that you decide to invest in. Go by proven results from fellow nurses, not just reviews posted by the program.

Below are some Studying Tips from our NCLEX Pros:

• Marathon not a sprint

◦ You could have up to 145 questions or 5 hours of testing, so it is important to pace yourself!

◦ Don’t burn yourself out on questions that are “Trench Questions”. These are ones that cause you to dig yourself into a ditch and ultimately burning valuable time and even more valuable brain power on. These are many to burn you out. Don’t fall into their trap. Give them your BEST “educated guess”, then move on!

• Frequent break during the test is a must!

◦ It is our recommendation to take a break every 30-40 questions. During this time, you can take a formal break by raising your hand to stop your test and stand up, or simply taking a quick 30 second break to rub your eyes, stretch your body and mentally refresh for your next set of questions.

• Each question is an island and not connected to others

◦ Remember, the NCLEX knows that nursing students LOVE to CHANGE their answers! This is eliminated by the test not allowing you to flag questions, return and change you Answers! One study showed that 70% of the time, college students found that following gut and selecting the first answer was the correct one!
